About this title

Synopsis:

Judo: Beginner to Black Belt is a modern presentation of sport judo techniques from white belt novice to black belt expert, and a guide to colored belt ranking. There are falls, throws, counterthrows, matwork grappling, contestant strategy and tactics, and a selection of formal routines. Judo can be practiced by the once-a-week player, or it can be an activity for the dedicated athlete aspiring to compete at the world tournament level. Judo is an Olympic Games event.

About the Author:

Bruce Tegner was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1929. Both of his parents were professional teachers of judo and jujitsu; they began his formal instruction in the martial arts when Bruce was two years old!

In a field where most individuals concentrate on a narrow specialty, Bruce Tegner's experience was unusual. His education covered many aspects of weaponless fighting of many styles, as well as sword and stick techniques. At the age of 21, after becoming the California state judo champion, he gave up competition to devote himself to research, course development, teaching and teacher-training.

In the U.S. armed forces, Mr. Tegner trained instructors to teach unarmed combat; he taught military police tactics; he coached sport judo teams. Later, he trained actors and devised choreographed fight scenes for movies and television. From 1952-1957 he operated his own school in Hollywood, California. There, he taught men, women, and children of very different abilities. Some students were naturally gifted in the martial arts, while others were blind and disabled.
