New edition, revised and corrected, published in the same year as the true first. Two volumes. 16mos. [4], 252; [4], 287pp. Text in French. Bound with half-titles into quarter leather and marbled papercovered boards, with page edges marbled. Bindings with moderate rubbing and edgewear, Vol. I with a chip at the crown and Vol. II with a 3" L-shaped split at the upper shoulder neatly strengthened, both volumes with moderate foxing throughout, very good and sound. Félicité de Choiseul-Meus' most notable work, in part because it was banned during the Bourbon Restoration in France. Three of her works were banned in 1825, but only *Julie, ou J'ai Sauvé Ma Rose* was ordered to be destroyed in 1827 on the decision of the Seine Magistrates' court. It is thought that this decision was made largely due to the lesbian sex scenes at the end of the novel. Most 19th Century copies on the market were published after the passing of the Law on the Freedom of the Press of 29 July 1881, which apparently freed publishers to bring the title back to market. An early and very uncommon example of erotic lesbian fiction that survived the 1827 order for its destruction. Seller Inventory # 547886
