Synopsis: Book by Piatigorsky, Jacqueline

From Publishers Weekly: Piatigorsky's autobiography is largely a lament about how miserable life can be even for the very rich. Born a Rothschild, she had a devastating childhood, for she was ignored by her parents and tormented by an unfeeling nanny. She developed into a withdrawn young woman whose only emotional outlet in an otherwise empty life was a passionate crush on the famous pianist Alfred Cortot. After a failed marriage to a distant cousin, she found happiness with her second husband, the renowned cellist Gregor Piatigorsky, and fulfillment in her children and her skills at tennis and chess. One can appreciate how the author's unhappy childhood, which she describes in heartbreaking detail, led to emotional problems in later life, but one wonders if there is an audience for this self-pitying memoir. Book Description St Martins Press - A Joan Kahn Book, New York, 1988. Hard Back. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition First Printing Stated. 81 Pages. Blue boards with gold spine lettering. No defects noted and interior text pages are flawless. This is the autobiography of Jacqueline Piatigorsky, wife of the great Russian cellist Gregor Piatigorsky and daughter of Baron Edourad de Rothschild, head of the Rothschild bank in Paris. Born to great wealth, Piatigorsky grew up in Talleyrand's palace overlooking the Parisian Tuileries Gardens. Yet her childhood was lonely and isolated. She was ignored by her beautiful, socially-driven parents and left in the care of a nanny who terrorized her. The legendary name was surrounded by a mysterious aura of power that symbolized a dynasty from which women were excluded. Her one escape from her awful situation was chess. According to Piatigorsky, she would retreat into a corner of her room with her sister where the two would immerse themselves in a game of chess for hours. Chess was my friend and it became a refuge. Early in her adult life, Piatigorsky became infatuated with the famous pianist Alfred Cortot. She followed him everywhere, despite his stable and seemingly happy marriage. Her first marriage, to a distant cousin, was a miserable one. He married her, quite simply, for her money which he proceeded to lavish on his mistress. It was not until Piatigorsky met cellist Gregor Piatigorsky that she started to feel the security and love she needed so much. Indeed, it was their strong relationship, she says, that give her the ability to overcome her feelings of worthlessness and isolation that were cultivated in her as a child. More than just the trials and tribulations of being born into a wealthy family, this book is an inspiring story of a woman's search for her own identity and her self-respect. It is sad, touching, and, ultimately, courageous. Jacqueline Piatigorsky lives in Los Angeles, California. She has two children. An avid competitor, Ms. Piatigorsky is a world-class chess player and a championship tennis player. She also is a sculptor and her work appears in many galleries in the country. Size: 5 3/4" x 8 1/2". Bookseller Inventory # 18397
