Junior League cookbooks have a long and venerable history of offering the best (and sometimes the worst!) of their local community cookery. The Dallas chapter first published their first effort on that front in 1923, certainly one of the earliest if not the earliest of such chapter cookbooks; the present example is the third edition, revised and enlarged. This book opens with a lengthy section of suggested menus, including a country breakfast, summer buffet, Sunday night supper, "Kentucky country supper" (featuring buckwheat cakes and duck hash), and two different Mexican suppers. Like all such publications, the recipes range from the mundane (chicken spaghetti, Effie's carrot ring, yum-yum salad) to the more exalted (oysters en brochette, chicken and brains in ramekins, molded caviar salad). There are a significant number of Creole and Creole-inspired recipes scattered throughout, and an entire chapter dedicated to Mexican dishes. Provenance: Front pastedown with Christmas gift inscription to Helen from Fayetta, dated 1942. 8vo (23.5 cm, 9.25"). 312 pp. Brown, Culinary Americana, 4198 (for second ed.). Publisher's blue pebbled cloth, front cover with title stamped in white; lightly dust-soiled, spine mildly sunned, extremities slightly rubbed. A few pages with spots of faint pinkish staining; occasional instances of light spotting elsewhere, overall generally clean. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Junior League of Dallas, Inc., Dallas, TX, 1948. Junior League cookbooks have a long and venerable history of offering the best (and sometimes the worst!) of their local community cookery. The Dallas chapter first published their first effort on that front in 1923, certainly one of the earliest if not the earliest of such chapter cookbooks; the present example is the fourth edition. While somewhat altered from the previous issue ? for instance, the poultry section includes fewer recipes for chicken spaghetti and more for barbecued chicken ? this outing covers the same wide range of recipes and still includes the separate chapter for Mexican food, offering a "quick enchilada casserole," chalupas, and arroz con pollo. => A notable addition here is a section on the "new field" of freezing cooked foods, and the endpapers offer charts of herb pairings and points of classic wine service. 8vo (23.5 cm, 9.25"). 347, pp. Brown, Culinary Americana, 4198 (for second ed.). Publisher's green cloth, front cover and spine with title stamped in white; binding very slightly shaken, joints and edges rubbed. Front free endpaper with upper outer corner colored; one leaf with lower edge chipped. Pages clean and crisp. A nice copy, showing no signs of ever having visited a kitchen.
