About this Item

A New Edition. London: Printed by T. Bensley, 1805. Two volumes, octavo, bound in contemporary full calf, rebacked. Pp.252, 284, illustrated with twenty-one stipple-engraved portraits of notable persons of the time, including Charles James Fox, George III, Lord North, Edmund Burke, Duke of Grafton, Sir William Draper, etc. Extra engraved title-page in each volume. Prelims lightly foxed, and very light foxing to plates throughout. Original covers worn at extremities, but the whole set resewn and rebacked and therefore quite sound. 'Junius, the pseudonym of the author of a series of letters that appeared in the 'Public Advertiser' from 1769 to 1771, attacking with bitter scorn and invective, among others, the duke of Grafton, the Duke of Bedford, Lord North, and Lord Mansfield in his judicial capacity, while George III is not spared the irony of the writer. The identity of Junius, which he concealed with great skill, has never been definitely established; but there are strong reasons for attributing the letters to Sir Phillip Francis. Lord Temple has also been claimed at the author.' (Oxford Companion to English Literature). Bookseller Inventory # 3532
