About this Item

Softcover. The author looks in detail at 15 local crimes, all distinguished by the common thread of violent or untimely death. Many are linked by a similar motive - money. When in July 1912, the monstrous George Smith drowned Bessie Mundy in a bath at their lodgings in Herne Bay's High Street, he stood to inherit £2,500 in gilt edged securities, an enormous sum in those days. The recovery of money from the safe of the Plaza cinema in Dover helped to convict Leslie Hammond of the brutal murder of George Roberts, the cinema manager. Money, too, was thought to be the reason for Gwendoline Marshall's murder at her home in Pluckley, near Ashford, in October 1980. A local boy was convicted of the crime although he has continually protested his innocence and has received strong local support. The 'Sunday Times' and T.V.'s 'In Suspicious Circumstances' led others to question the verdict. After the £26m Brinks-Mat bullion robbery, police operations centred on the house of a major criminal, Kenneth Noye, at West Kingsdown, near Bromley. It was in the extensive grounds of this house that an undercover policeman was stabbed to death. The case was to become a cause celebres. Illus. + Map and Index. 128pp. trade size softcover. From the library of true-crime writer, Wilfred Gregg, with his personal b/plate. F. with no creasing to covers. Bookseller Inventory # 14301
