About this Item

Original brown cloth covers with embossed (stamped) decorations and designs on the front and back, spine ornately decorated with gold lettering and designs. The tips of the spine and the corners are lightly worn otherwise the volume is in remarkably good condition. This curious novel makes references to the Know-Nothing political movement of the mid-nineteenth century but even the Library of Congress does not identify a presumed author. The title page of this copy indicates the book was published in Boston by Jewett and in St. Louis by Keith & Woods. The copy in the Library of Congress was published in Boston by Jewett and in New York by Sheldon, Lamport & Blakeman. Signs of light damp staining on the upper corner of the first few pages. A previous owner's pencil signature on the front fly leaf dated March 1862. Bookseller Inventory # 001649
