About this Item

A wonderfully detailed color lithographic map from Rand McNally and Co., published in 1888 by Rand McNally and Co in Chicago. This map measures 21.5"x29.5". In 1856, William Rand opened a printing shop in Chicago and two years later hired a newly-arrived Irish immigrant, Andrew McNally, to work in his shop. 1859 Rand and McNally were hired to run the Chicago Tribune's entire printing operation, for who they had conducted business with previously. In 1868, the two men formally established Rand McNally & Co. and bought out the Tribune's printing business. The company initially focused on printing tickets and timetables for Chicago's railroad industry, and in the following year they supplemented that business by publishing complete railroad guides. In 1870, the company expanded into printing business directories and an illustrated newspaper, the People's Weekly. The very first Rand McNally map, created using a new cost-saving wax engraving method, appeared in the December 1872 edition of its Railroad Guide. Rand McNally became an incorporated business in 1873, with Rand as its president and McNally as vice president. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing/staining/creasing and evidence of previous binding in margin. Bookseller Inventory # jn427d
