About this Item

Vellum backed patterned boards. No. 226 of 500 copies printed by John Henry Nash. 9 1/2" x 12 1/2." Fifty-two pages, complete. Ink notation on front endpaper by a former owner, Frances Jones. Ink inscription from John Henry Nash to Frances Jones: "To Frances Jones, As a mark of esteem and request to a true woman who showed much kindness to a stranger, and a sometime sojourner within her [.]--one who has won [.] hence--and for her true sympathy and help to those--suffering--left, to still struggle on. From: John H. Nash, San Francisco, California, March 21, 1924." Front corner bumped. The Kasidah is a pseudotranslation by Richard F. Burton. Within this poem, Burton brings Sufi ideas to a Western audience. From the Introduction: "The Kasidah is a philosophic poem, written in rhymed iambic couplets, to which Burton gives the name of Bahr Tawil (long verse). The first of its nine sections is descriptive, painting with living colors the desert and the waking caravan at dawn. The next four are reminiscent and expository, setting forth: the emptiness of teaching from Moses to Hiraz and Longfellow; the brevity of man's life history; the inconsequence of religious creeds .".
