Katagami Japanese Stencil

A Japanese Mulberry Paper Stencil (26 x 42 cm sheet size), being a beautifully intricate hand-cut repeat design; such precision and delicacy both in conception and execution defies belief. The stencils are made of two or more layers of handmade Mulberry paper laminated together, which is hardened and waterproofed with persimmon juice. This stencil retains the blue dye meticulously applied by the late Edo dyers, 1800-1840, and is in perfect condition, an exceptional survival as left by the 19th Century Edo craftsmen.
