About this Item

x, 181 p. Blue Cloth, with some spotting and soiling to boards, the spine has browned and is mostly intact, with light rubbing at top and bottom and one small puncture. See photo. Pages are lightly tanned at edges but still supple. Otherwise a clean, sturdy copy. ''Katerina, or Yekaterina Ivanovna, was produced by the Moscow Art Theatre during the season of 1912-1913 . . . Afterward it was produced in various theatres throughout Russia. Like Andreyev's earlier story, 'The Abyss,' this drama created a sensation. It became the topic of discussion everywhere in Russia. . . . Mock trials were staged in various cities where the play was presented, and Katerina was acused and denounced by some and warmly defended by others. For the most part, men censured her, while the women defended her.'' This authorized translation from the original manuscript, with a preface by Herman Bernstein, was given in New York in 1929, and ran for 19 performances. It was staged by Eva Le Gallienne (daughter of the poet Richard Le Gallienne) and featured Walter Beck, Donald Cameron, and Mme. Alla Nazimova. Bookseller Inventory # 000448
