Synopsis: The Kaya and Sai series lay the foundation for children to have an openness and readiness to be citizens of the world and embrace cultures that are different from theirs through the medium of food. The taste, smell, and color of the dish reflect its origin. Kaya and Sai offer the readers “small bites” that connect food to its country/culture. The facts are fun and lighthearted, and young readers expand their vocabulary with words such as “Namaste,” “Pura Vida,” and “Konichiwa.” The information often mirrors the taste of the dish they are sampling. Dishes such as Chicken Tikka Masala tastes BOLD like the Himalayas, and RICH like the Taj Mahal. Each book explores a specific ethnic dish from a different country, so readers learn about unfamiliar countries and cultures through the medium of food. They teach young readers about different countries and cultures. Every story takes place in the same urban setting inspired by their lives in New York City. After their Dad proclaims “YOU DON’T HAVE TO LIKE EVERYTHING YOU TRY, BUT YOU HAVE TO TRY EVERYTHING ONCE!” the family heads to a hip ethnic eatery. Sai is apprehensive but Kaya is bold. The adventure begins! The Kaya and Sai series is urban, chic, intelligent, fun, and delicious. Kaya and Sai put the mindfulness back into meals. The goal is to teach kids (and perhaps their parents) a more thoughtful way to eat. Many adults eat thoughtlessly, simply to satisfy hunger. They don’t take the time to taste or think about their food and where it came from. Mindful eating is an ancient Buddhist belief that connects eating to meditation. The belief is that one should take time during meals to taste, acknowledge, and understand where your meal comes from. Kaya and Sai explore and acknowledge the tastes of their meals and put them into a cultural context for the reader. This exercise is repeated in every book and includes a simple recipe that the child can make with a parent. The series and will teach kids to embrace the whole process of having a meal. Finally, travel to exotic places can be difficult for families with young children. The Kaya and Sai series enables a young audience to “taste” the cultural ingredients that comprise their meals and learn about their dinner’s origins. Sisters Kaya and Sai let kids experience the world without leaving home. Bon Appetit!

About the Author: These books are co-written by Dr. Nidhi Kumar, a practicing cardiologist, and her daughter Kaya, who is in second grade. Sai is Dr. Kumar’s younger child. Dr. Kumar and her family live in Piscataway, New Jersey, with their Labradoodle named Aspen. Dr. Kumar practices cardiology in central New Jersey, and is Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at Rutgers University Medical School. Her professional areas of interest are heart disease in women, including that which is pregnancy related. She enjoys meditation, skiing, surfing, and coaching Kaya’s soccer team. Throughout her medical training Dr. Kumar and her family enjoyed international cuisines all over Manhattan. Exploring new restaurants was a way for her family to spend time together and enabled Kaya and her younger sibling Sai to learn to love ethnic food. Dr. Kumar soon found that their meals together were a powerful way to teach her children about different cultures and countries without leaving the city. She believes that by giving children a small "taste" of other cultures in their early developmental years parents prepare them to be successful young adults who think with a global perspective. Kaya Singh, now 8 years old, was born in New York City. She attends Rutgers Preparatory School in New Jersey, where she excels in math. Like her mom, she likes skiing, surfing and soccer. Kaya loves spending time with Sai and Aspen. Her favorite foods are Gallo Pinto, Chicken Tikka Masala, and Shrimp Tempura Sushi. When Kaya goes out to dinner she does not like to order off the children’s menu because “Everything is too bland!”
