About this Item

Octavo. Originally published in 1936, this novel is Orwell's story of George Comstock, a poor young man who works in a a grubby London bookstore and spends his evenings shivering in a rented room trying to write. Just as in his autobiographical "Down and Out in London and Paris", his characters live on the lower level of life from an economic viewpoint; nevertheless, they are rich in their love of literature. Lionel Trilling discovered this novel and called it "a summa of all the criticisms of a commercial civilization that have ever been made and the hopeless plight of the lower middle class man." V.S. Pritchett called Orwell the conscience of his generation. A near fine copy bound in green cloth, spine lettering silver and yellow, in a near fine unclipped pictorial dust jacket.
