About this title

Synopsis:

Kelin’s Journey is a post-apocalyptic preteen adventure. It is the story of two twelve year old boys who survive a devastating pandemic that decimates the world’s population. Kelin is stranded 2000 miles from his family that he believes is still alive. He is alone except for his friend Josh, who is orphaned by the pandemic. The two boys begin a journey across a depopulated America, dealing with the few people, both good and bad, that they encounter on their quest to find Kelin's family.

From the Back Cover:

Twelve year old Kelin is visiting his grandmother on a Missouri farm.  His parents and siblings plan to join him but before they leave their California home, a deadly pandemic arises that will decimate the world's population.  Kelin's father, a teaching physician, instructs the grandmother to quarantine herself and Kelin.  Josh, a boy from a neighboring farm who is being watched over by the grandmother while his parents are on a trip, joins them in quarantine.  Kelin's parents and siblings flee to a cabin in the Sierras.

As the weeks pass, the disease spreads, rioting ensues, and utilities, transportation and communications fail, leaving Kelin cutoff from his family.  Kelin's grandmother dies from natural causes hastened by the stress of events and Josh's parents succumb to the disease.  In a narrative both poignant and uplifting, the author takes Kelin and Josh through their struggles to survive and for Kelin to reunite with his family.  Allies join them and foes impede them on their journey across a decimated America.  They find that only tiny pockets of civilization have survived and some of those are not so civil.  Kelin's Journey is a must read for any age reader who enjoys a classic quest in a modern, realistic setting where the heroes must display ingenuity, leadership and courage to overcome obstacles presented by man and nature.
