About this Item

Edited by Bell Irvin Wiley. 8vo. Tan cloth, pictorial dust jacket. xxvi, (40pp), 281pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good/very good. Mild jacket edgewear. First modern edition, being a reprint of the ultra-rare 1895 first edition. This is the "Civil War Book Club Edition," with a special tipped-in colophon leaf preceding the half-title page signed boldly in blue fountain pen by Wiley (1906-80). Front pastedown bears inkstamped ownership name Herbert L. Harper (1905-83), director of the Tennessee Historical Commission. Civil War Book Club editions -- unlike Book of the Month Club and other book clubs -- are not cheapo reprints using inferior materials. The Civil War Book Club simply purchased quantities of the legitimate first printing direct from the publisher, then tipped in their signed colophon leaf. James I. Robertson Jr. calls it "'A strange conglomerate of romanticism and realism,' and possessed of 'some of the choicest stories ever to be written about the Civil War.'" NEVINS I, 134. NEW HOWES M 866 note. Bookseller Inventory # 34667
