About this Item

Two frontis plates, [xxiii], 409pp, [vi]. All plates present including "The Kidnapped and The Redeemed" frontis plate, depicting an African American woman. The two facing plates are still separated by the original tissue. Text block has occasional foxing and moisture stain (<1") to most pages in the upper corner. Does not affect the images or readability of the text. Binding is original, cloth with gilt spine lettering. Spine is worn and faded, lettering is minimally readable. Boards are worn and have moisture damage. Text block is tight and very readable. Unlike some slave narratives of the antebellum period, it has been confirmed that the story told by Pickard was not a work of fiction. An uncommon book. Sabin 62614. Bookseller Inventory # 5085
