About this Item

F/NF First Edition, the preferred British issue. Cream cloth with dark blue or green lettering on front cover and spine. A virtual who's who of British authors, painters and composers - supplemented by some notable Americans, French notables and other nationalities. Numerous color plates tipped onto white inserted pages with yellow boxes, one by Rackham, one by Parrish, one by Nielsen, others by Dulac, Christy, Flagg, Monet, Crane. The authors all write short 1/2 page to 1 page tributes to the King. Remarkably unfoxed despite the paper, except the inscription page has been darkened as if something were laid on top of it. There is a longish inscription to 'notre cher Pierre pour ses vingt et un ans' [21st birthday?] plus additional text on the right front endpaper, Pierre Van Bastelaer's interesting square bookplate on the left, but the inscription is in such nice calligraphy (and dated Jan 4 1915 shortly after the book was issued in Dec 1914) that it adds to the character of the book. In addition, the calligraphic inscription is signed by both Rene and Marguerite Van Bastelaer, Rene no doubt being the author of the monumental catalogue raisonne of Breugel's prints issued in 1908 in Brussels and perhaps explaining the artistic touch. In a 99% complete plain light brown DJ with a repeat of the cover and spine lettering in dark green ink plus notes about the tribute to the Belgian King that repeats what is on the title page (plus more) together with a big 3/- price. The book itself has quite clean white covers and spine, the corners are bumped a bit but the head and foot of spine look fine, a small amount of rubbing along top and bottom of cover edges, a couple little dots of green color on the rear cover, but overall really nice and tight and clean. The DJ (now in a Brodart cover) used extremely thin and very fragile paper so it is remarkable it survived - since there is what appears to be a fold line across the middle of the front and back covers, it perhaps only survived because it may have been folded and laid into the book. A clean, tight and bright made even more collectible because of the scarce and very fragile DJ as well as association with a very important figure in Belgium's arts. Lattimore & Haskell p.42.
