Book Description New York: Morgan & Morgan, 1975. Book Condition: Sehr gut. 106 S. mit zahlr. Abb. Umschl. leicht berieben. - When Richard King, an indomitable and tough young riverboat captain, purchased part of a Spanish land grant on the banks of Santa Gertrudis Creek in 1853, he began a ranching empire and a South Texas tradition. The King Ranch has since spread into Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Florida, Brazil, Argentina, Venezuela, Australia, Spain, and Morocco. The Kleberg family, descendents of patriarch King, has continued the historic tradition. The photographs in this book, the work of Toni Frissell who as aclose'riend was allowed to make an unprecedented photographic record of activities on the ranch during a number of visits between 1939 and 1944, are already historically important. Toni Frissell has documented the King Ranch vaquero and his world. Roundup and branding, drives, the cow camp, and the individuals who participated are all presented for the first time: the Kinehos (King Ranch people) at work. By climbing a windmill and fastening herself with a strap, she obtained dramatic overhead shots of cattle drives stretching out into the distance, giving a vivid image of the vastness associated with the King Ranch. The Kleberg family has been the dominant force on the ranch for more than three-quarters of a century, touching every facet of the vast operation. Holland McCombs, himself a veteran of almost thirty years of close contact with the Ranch, says, "Robert Justus Kleberg, Jr., was a man of many and ambitious dreams. Unlike most of us, he had the force and the ability to accomplish most of them. Perhaps his most cherished dream was that of supplyinghuman energy around the world, especially to the disadvantaged and underdeveloped regions." "With these cattle and horses and our techniques," said Kleberg, "we can do this." "Kleberg lived to see the King Ranch cattle, horses, men, and techniques supplying 'red meat, protein, and human energy' on five continents," writes MCombs. Much has changed since these pictures were taken over thirty years ago, but history seems to live there, because they still do some things the old way. "We do not do it this way because of history and tradition," said Kleberg. "We do it this way because it is the most efficient way under our set of circumstances." Today the King Ranch has some 365,000 head of cattle spread over the 13 million acres of ranchland it operates around the world. The King Ranch of South Texas, its work, its play, its people is the subject of this book, produced by two who have known it for more than a generation.
