About this Item

Quarto. 151pp. One of 100 copies, signed by the illustrator, Edmund Dulac. With ten mounted color plates by Dulac. Rosenthal, a Parisian jeweler, commissioned Dulac to illustrate his work on the history and intrigue of the pearl. Drawing his inspiration from the Middle and Far East, these ten exquisitely colored illustrations are among the finest of Dulac's book illustrations. They are also among the last he would produce, as enthusiasm for deluxe illustrated editions waned in the years immediately following World War I. Along with the Arabian Nights, this is one of the scarcer books in Dulac's oeuvre. In the publisher's binding of vellum-backed gilt-decorated boards. Extremities show slight toning, else a fine, bright copy. Bookseller Inventory # 24918
