Synopsis: Once an ancient Surrey market town, Kingston-upon-Thames is now a thriving suburb of Southwest London, which still boasts an impressive market and an extensive range of shops, restaurants, and visitor attractions. This book compares historical images of the area with modern photographs of the same viewpoints today. We can see just how much has changed, and also what has survived the threats of war, demolition, and redevelopment. A fascinating peak into the rich history of Kingston-upon-Thames, this book should be equally absorbing for those who know and love the area, and for those who love British history.

About the Author: Tim Everson has been researching and writing about Kingston-upon-Thames and the surrounding area since the early 1990s. He has had numerous works published, was editor of Surrey History from 1994 to 2004, and was Local History Officer for the Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames from 1990 to 2001. He is a full-time writer and lives in Surrey.

Book Description PAVILION BOOKS, United Kingdom, 2012. Hardback. Book Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Bloody Paralyser tells the story of the largest British bomber aircraft of World War 1 and the men who flew them. In 1915, the biggest plane ever seen in Britain, the Handley Page Type 0, took flight for the first time, a twin engine monster with a 100 foot wingspan, designed to be a bloody paralyser to the Germans. Operating mainly at night, the Handley Page bombers attacked German and German-occupied towns and cities with near impunity, disrupting the enemy s industry and crippling its war effort. The men that flew in the bloody paralysers were the forerunners of the crews of Bomber Command in World War 2, and now their story is told in their own words. Bristling with Lewis guns, the lasting legacy of the aircraft was such that for many years after the war, any large aircraft came to be called a Handley Page in Britain.
