About this title

Is a unique lens on the little-known life of refugees trapped in an out-of-the-way Uzbekistan outpost during World War II. Volodia Tarko, Herman Taube's semi-autobiographical protagonist, is raised by devout Jewish grandparents in Lodz, Poland; exiled from his home by war, he leaves behind the forms of orthodoxy - though not its spirit to become a medic. Ministering to the suffering Jewish and gentile refugees, like him caught between Soviet apparatchiks and Soviet idealists, Taube dramatizes the wrenching physical tribulations the refugees endured and at the same time gives us a moving story of love, of compassion, of commitment to justice and of the lonely triumphs of man's better nature.
