Jennifer Joan wanted a kitten of her own and finally her mother said she was old enough to take care of one. Not wanting to wait for a good time to look for a kitten, Jennifer Joan posts notices around the neighborhood asking if anyone has one for her. When Mrs. Smith comes to care for her and falls asleep, people start bringing kittens. Soon Jennifer Joan has kittens everywhere. When mom and dad return and say the kittens must go, a lady shows up who has many kittens but wants more. She pulls a fish out of her handbag and all kittens follow her to her home. Jennifer Joan keeps the first cat given to her by the milkman that she named Black Jack. Interesting to note is that this book, published in 1967 during the Civil Rights Movement, has an African American woman as one of the people bringing kittens to Jennifer Joan's home.
