About this Item

This is a first printing of an important collection of six related short stories of crime fiction set in the American South. It is one of the Faulkner titles that does not state first printing on the verso of the title page. From the front flap of the NF dust jacket: "Gavin Stevens, that wise and forbearing student of crime and the folkways of the South, is the central character in William Faulkner's eighteenth volume. Because Stevens knows the point at which retributive justice ends and compassionate guidance begins, because he understands his people and can make generous allowances for their frailties, he is far more than their chronicler; he is their interpreter, inquisitor and defender. Around him, William Faulkner has woven his new book in six sections, each of which is an entity in itself and which together create an integrated pattern of many aspects of the mind and manners of the South." This first printing is bound in red cloth, with stamped gilt lettering and decoration on the front cover and spine, on black fields. The exterior is well preserved, black topstain pages, firm binding, no corner bumps. The binding is firm. Light age toning on the rear of the DJ. Minor wear at top and bottom of spine. First issue dust jacket, with price of $2.75 in upper right corner of the front flap. Front cover illustration depicts a man's face in profile with city buildings in the background. This intact DJ has minor edge wear and moderate age toning, with faint smudging on rear panel. Unclipped price of $2.75 on front flyleaf. The pages show light age toning, mainly evident at the extremities. Book dealer's label affixed to the rear flyleaf: "Philip C. Duschnes / Rare Books / 757 Madison Ave / New York, N. Y." Overall: F/NF. Bookseller Inventory # 160903
