About this title

Synopsis:

The signing of a lease, by Ladd & Co. and King Kamehameha III on July 29, 1835, for land at Koloa, Kauai marked the beginning of the sugar industry, which, more than any other, created modern Hawaii. This book will be of value to the historian interested in the sugar industry as well as the general reader interested in the history of Hawaii, especially Kauai. Koloa Plantation was the model for sugar plantations to follow, thus this book provides insights into the entire sugar industry of Hawaii. In this 2 Ed. a brief epilogue has been added to bring the history of Koloa Plantation up to date from 1935 to 1948 when it was merged with Grove Farm Co., a rival sugar plantation.

From the Preface: Koloa was described by James J. Jarves as being at the time "a mere hamlet, seldom visited even by a missionary". Here Hooper, a young man scarcely twenty-six years old, without experience in agriculture, the mechanical trades or sugar plantation arrives, builds himself a grass house and undertakes to start a sugar plantation. His letters are full of the zest and ardor of youth. He works hard, is disappointed, is elated, and keeps incessantly at his task until a permanent manager is secured.
