About this title

Synopsis:

[From inside of front cover] This book surveys Willem de Kooning's drawings and pastels throughout his long, influential career in American art, and documents his recent involvement with figurative sculpture. Over 70 works are illustrated, eight in full color. The drawings range from precise anatomical studies of the late 1930s to nearly formless figure-landscape sketches made in 1969. The lead essay deals with recurring cycles of abstraction and figuration, and centers on the expressionistic "woman" image which, since the 1950's has been the trademark for de Kooning's gestural style. A second essay discusses the controversial new sculptures, many of them versions of the "woman" image. In addition, recent photographs of the artist at work in his Easthampton, Long Island studio appear throughout the text. Drawing has always been central to de Kooning's art, both as an independent medium and as an approach to painting. the only European trained member of the New York Abstract Expressionist group, de Kooning was an accomplished draftsman long before he emerged as an avant-gardist in the late 1940s. His black enamel drawings from that period are the most radical of his career; the exquisite "woman" pastels, contemporary with the famous paintings of primitive, aggressive women, reveal an intimate side of his character and represent a major graphic achievement of the mid-20th century. Later drawings and the smaller sculptures revive "automatic" techniques in the work of a master who continues to be a vital presence in American art.
