Synopsis: An original story and cautionary tale about the first Komodo Dragon on earth. Born with beautiful colors, patterns, shapes and a crown, portrayed in a style inspired by the age-old Indonesian shadow puppet tradition of Wayang Kulit, Kraken-ka is transformed into his present day form after his creator, Naga, the Goddess of Wisdom and Beauty, gives him three chances to learn to take from the earth only what he needs. An accompanying Performing Arts CD contains puppets patterns, a script, and poster for children to create their own show about the story, plus parent/teacher educational materials that meet national education standards in mathematics, art and social studies.
About the Author: A graduate of Barnard College where she studied English and writing, co-author Jodi Parry Belknap is a former teacher and writer who now runs a firm that provides private publishing services in Hawaii. Earlier in her career she traveled throughout the Pacific and Far East on assignment for a major New York travel trade publisher and became a prolific author of books and articles on culture, art and travel in the region. This is her second book for young children. Co-author Dr. Tamara Montgomery is a full professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa where for more than three decades she has directed the graduate program in Youth Theatre, Creative Drama and Puppetry. Well known as a director of multicultural theatre, she annually presents plays and musicals to young and old on the Kennedy Theatre main stage at the University. An adaptation of Kraken-Ka, the Komodo Dragon was mounted in September 2007 to enthusiastic young audiences, educators, parents and grandparents. Educated at Arizona State University and the University of Southern California, Dr. Montgomery is the author of five books on educational puppetry, including the classic text, Puppetry in Early Childhood Education. She is already at work on a second book in the Pacific Rim series for Calabash Books.
