Folio. Unpaginated. [2] leaves (Title, and the author's Preface), 7 loose leaves (plates) as issued. Original printed dust-jacket over stiff cardboard portfolio, with colored illustration pasted on front cover. Illustrated title page. "Krieg" (War) is not only Willibald Krain's best known work, it is also the artist's powerful response to World War I. Indeed, the portfolio containing the 7 pacifistics color lithographs presents a bleak view of the war from the German perspective. The images depict the war as a monstruous, murderous, futile and mechanistic nightmare. Published in Switzerland, in the middle of the First World War, this anti-War portfolio didn't prevent one of the most destructive wars in history to keep raging on for two more years. The seven plates are as followed:- 1) Die Kabinette- 2) Gerüchte- 3) Gebet um Sieg- 4) Blutrausch- 5) Die Frauen- 6) Die Fahnen- 7) SiegEach plate measures 10 x 13 2/8" (image appr. 9 x 12"). Dust-jacket foxed along edges, with minor and sporadic closed tears. Text in German, gothic script. Dj in overall good-, portfolio and plates in very good condition. About the artist: Willibald Krain (1886-1945) was born and studied in Breslau, Germany, and then attended the Munich Academy. He worked as a caricaturist, illustrator and fine artist; much of his illustrative work was political, and was published in the major satirical and social democratic papers of the day, such as "Lachen Links" (1924-27) and "Wahre Jakob." He was himself a socialist, and produced cartoons which attacked the suffering caused to the working classes in Weimar Germany by unemployment. He also caricatured, for example, the struggle for the minds of Germany's children between Church, State and Army, and then began to highlight the dangers of militarism and Nazism. This resulted in his professional qualifications being withdrawn in 1933. In 1945 he was captured by the Red Army, and suffered a gunshot wound from which he died. Bookseller Inventory #
