About this Item

LESTER, J[ohn] and WILSON, D[aniel] L. Ku Klux Klan: Its Origin, Growth and Disbandment. New York: The Neale Publishing Company, 1905. 1st ed. thus. 198, [10] pp. Illus., portraits. Orig. cloth. Light wear to spine ends, faint scattered foxing, else very good. HOWES L-272. First Neale edition and the first with an introduction and notes by Walter L. Fleming. "The body of this volume is a reprint of a small book privately printed in 1884, written by Wilson based on material provided by Klansman Lester and other members of the organization. Wilson was a Presbyterian minister who graduated from Washington and Lee in 1873, after having started his schooling under Jed Hotchkiss. Lester had served in the 3rd Tennessee Infantry during the war. There are no names in the Lester-Wilson account, and the perspective is rather narrowly limited to the environs of Pulaski, Tennessee. The usefulness of the book is markedly increased by a fine, thirty-page introduction by Dr. Fleming, who also supplied notes in the text. More than sixty pages of Klan documents are appended."
