About this Item

A rare and very interesting book, a lg. oblong 4to in grey cloth in near fine condition. Boris Polevoy was a highly successful Russian propagandist and literary commissar who was one of the first reporters to describe Auschwitz, and one of the first to see Hitler's bunker. His sensational account of Auschwitz is probably mostly fiction and certainly contains a lot of hyperbole. At his death in 1981 he was the secretary of the Union of Soviet Writers. He was in attendance at the Nuremberg trials, along with the 3 artists who did collaborative work under the pseudonym 'Kukryniksy'. The book opens with a panegyric to Kukryniksy's work by Polevoy, in Russian followed by an English translation. This is followed by a section of cartoons drawn by the 3 artists at Nuremberg (which include caricatures of Goering, Hess, von Ribbentrop and others), with bilingual captions attributed to Kukryniksy being very interesting though unmistakably propagandistic reminiscences of the event. The book closes with a series of full-page plates that are all details and sketch-versions of a single painting; 'Witness for the Prosecution', a remarkable work which depicts lawyers and the accused at Nuremberg being shown video of the horrors of a death camp. The opening section also has 3 full-page plates of other paintings, one of them the famous though inaccurate 'The End', depicting the last moments in Hitler's bunker. Bookseller Inventory # 11095
