About this Item

Large Folio. Second Edition augmented. pp. [24], 708, 17, [1]. With moveable paper volvelle (wheel) for discovering solar and lunar eclipses past and present. Divided into four books each opening with an engraved historiated headpiece and decorative initial letters. The title page displays an engraved vignette / device. Contents include numerous astronomical tables as well as 9 fold out tables interspersed with the text. An engraving on p.315 depicts the Hebrew Tabernacle. Sturdily bound in contemporary sprinkled calf with spine gilt in 7 compartments. Some rubbing, wear and staining are present to the covers. A name is printed in an old hand on the upper margin of the title page; an obscured name is also printed in small letters on either side of the edition statement. The faded remnant of an old book seller’s stamp is present on the front free end paper. Pages 617-618 contain 3-4 small holes - not obscuring the table numbers. Pages 619-620 contain groupings of larger holes with a number of table numbers obscured. The interior is otherwise clean. The volvelle on page 223 is in excellent condition. Father Jean-Louis d’Amiens’s "L’Atlas des temps" (first published in 1683) is a chronographic, geographic and historical work which incorporates elements of cosmography and astronomy. The author apparently proposes naming a new chronological period the "Age of Louis the Great." Extensive sections are devoted to sacred and profane chronology, ancient and ecclesiastical calendars, mobile feasts, and astronomical calculations. The work proposes to correct errors and chronological difficulties in the Old Testament etc. Chronology from the year 1 to 1685 is also discussed. The work was heavily criticized in its time although the Sorbonne called it "un véritable trésor astronomique, géoraphique et chronologique de toutes les hisoires divines et profanes" [See Pouy, p. 63]. This second edition is augmented with a response to the criticisms raised after the publication of the first edition. A scarce work. [Houzeau/Lancaster 13 903; Pouy, "Imprimerie Amiens," 63].
