ÉDITION ORIGINALE du texte et premier tirage du titre illustré et des DOUZE STUPÉFIANTES COMPOSITIONS dessinées par Maurice SAND. Elles ont été lithographiées par E. Vernier, tirées sur Chine en fond teinté ; le titre a été lithographié par Rambert. Maurice SAND (1823-1889), dessinateur et peintre, est le fils de George Sand dont il a adopté le pseudonyme. Ses dessins sont un curieux mélange de romantisme bizarre et de noirceur fantastique, tout en restant empreints d'une « charmante naïveté d'invention », selon l'expression de son maître Eugène Delacroix. CONTES D'INSPIRATION FANTASTIQUE, ces "Légendes Rustiques" se présentent comme un parcours en douze récits, chaque chapitre étant consacré à un lieu ou à un personnage mystérieux : loup-garou, pierres vivantes, moine des marais, lavandières infanticides, etc. Parallèlement au conte pour enfant, la lecture montre aussi combien ces légendes étaient le quotidien des habitants de la région, mêlant foi chrétienne apotropaïque et superstitions effrayantes. On retiendra notamment le chapitre dans lequel on apprend à distinguer les lubins des lupins, les lubins étant des « Esprits chagrins, rêveurs et stupides, [qui] passent leur vie à causer dans une langue inconnue, le long des murs des cimetières. En certains endroits on les accuse de s'introduire dans le champ du repos et d'y ronger les ossements. Dans ce dernier cas, ils appartiennent à la race des lycanthropes et des garous, et doivent être appelés Lupins ». L'intérêt de George Sand pour le fonds culturel et linguistique berrichon s'inscrit d'abord dans le développement de l'ethnographie nationale en Europe au XIXe siècle. En effet, dans un style et une langue qui évoquent le parler populaire sans jamais se laisser aller au pastiche, George Sand a recréé, avec respect et amour, des vieilles légendes du Berry, tour à tour drôles, étranges et naïves. Avec ce recueil, elle participait activement - aux côtés des romantiques, Nerval, Paul Lacroix et d'autres - au premier mouvement de sauvegarde de ce patrimoine culturel que représentaient les contes et les chansons populaires menacés d'oubli ; elle en révélait ainsi les profondes valeurs poétiques.
