Description:

An original Delcroix photograph with hand-tinted color in a light blue wood frame, some nicks and light chips to edges of frame. Delcroix's signature and photograph title is hand-written in pencil at bottom of photograph. Backing paper of frame has several short closed tears; no stock number on rear per Delcroix's usual practice. Frame H 27cm x L 22cm; image H 16.5cm x L 11.25cm. Photograph has not been examined outside of the frame. Original photographs from Delcroix's studio are uncommon. This photograph appears with the title of Iron Lace and Sunlight on page 37 in Delcroix's 1938 book PATIOS, STAIRWAYS AND IRON - LACE BALCONIES OF OLD NEW ORLEANS. With his stylistically unique images of the French Quarter and local environs Delcroix is regarded as among the best of all photographers who practiced their craft in New Orleans, a group which includes Arnold Genthe, Pops Whitsell, and Clarence John Laughlin. Delcroix combined shadow, composition, and soft focus to purposely create a romantic haziness on his glass plate negatives. He then applied soft pastel color by hand to further add nostalgic and mysterious qualities to the final print. Description copyright David Hallinan, Bookseller. Bookseller Inventory #
