Description:

Collates as [frontis plate], [title leaf], 1-8, [missing 9-84], 85-136. H 12cm x L 8.25cm. Original full red leather with center protruding tapered flap extending from front cover over the fore-edge so as to be secured within rear cover's belt-style tuck loop; interior side of fore-edge fold-over has slender tubular pocket intended for pencil. Leather rubbed and soiled, some wear and nicking along edges, front panel has "1815." written in antiquarian ink, four small holes to leather along fore-edge foldover, slender surface chip to leather on tapered flap. Remnant patch of red leather at front cover's interior top edge and fractional slender remnants at interior bottom edge indicate that a now lacking stiff front blank leaf once all formed a front accordion-style pocket. A second pocket (alas empty) present at rear and formed between the rear red leather cover and a stiff rear blank terminal leaf (which would normally be a pastedown). Both pockets were undoubtedly intended for an owner's notes, travel receipts, etc. and not for publisher maps as the title page would have most certainly announced such an expensive printing feature. Front hinge shaken. Foldout b/w frontispiece is detached and now laid-in; frontis features image of Cavendish Hall drawn by A. Mackworth and engraved by J. Hawksworth. Title page evidently had a center vignette which has been torn out; title lettering still present at top with extensive printer/publisher imprint at heel. Some foxing and toning to initial and rear leaves with top margin staining to final text page 136 and opposing stiff rear terminal leaf; latter also has tabulations and writing all in pencil too. A few stubs present where "ruled pages for engagements, &c" (pages 9-84) including cash account leaves were removed; concluding cash account leaf for December 1815 (pages 85-86) and yearly cash summary/memorandums leaf (pages 87-88) are clean as presumably the preceding leaves were not and were removed by the original owner so as to retain financial privacy. Perhaps qualifies as a chapbook. This book not listed on OCLC nor the British Library online catalogue. Bookseller Inventory #
