About this Item

First American edition, authorized and abridged. 8vo, original peach cloth lettered in black on the upper cover, the spine lettered in black and with extensive decoration in green and black. Remnants of inner flaps of the dustjacket affixed to the front and rear endpapers. 327pp. An acceptable copy of this very hard to find edition of one of the most famous and controversial works of the 20th century. The cloth in nice shape with just a bit of fading on the spine, internally clean but just a bit shaken, lending library ink stamp on front free-fly. A very uncommon edition of Lawrence’s most famous work. Knopf’s was the first authorized American edition. This issue is quite scarce, the Grosset and Dunlap reissue being usually the one found. At the time of this publication the only unabridged editions were either privately printed or pirated. It was not until 1960 that Penguin Books in London took on the risk of publishing it in full and was consequently prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Act 1959. The later acquittal proved a victory for not only the eminent authors who appeared as witnesses at the celebrated trial (including E.M. Forster, R. Hoggart, and H. Gardner) and Penguin Books, but for freedom of the press, writing and publishing in general. Bookseller Inventory # 20729
