About this Item

New York; Geo. A. Leavitt, no date [ca.1840]. 32mo [144x100mm]. 275pp. + four beautifully detailed steel-engraved plates, lacking or partially lacking tissue guards, representing scenes from the poem. Double-line border on each page. Full decoratively embossed in blind and gilt bevelled heavy brown publisher's luxurious morocco binding. Four raised bands with blind-stamped rouletting and decoratively embossed headbands with decorative gilt compartments on spine. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Slight cover wear. Contents slightly shaken. Owner's name on rear of endpaper. Little soiling and foxing in text, o/w good copy. *** Four narrative poems, with a connecting tale in prose, first published in 1817. It was set [on Byron's advice], in an atmosphere of Oriental splendor, and gave Moore a reputation among his contemporaries rivalling that of Byron and Scott. It was perhaps the most translated poem of its time, and it earned what was till then the highest price paid by an English publisher [3000 British Pounds]. The romance enjoyed enormous popularity during the poet's lifetime and for most of the nineteenth century. *** Lalla Rookh is the daughter of the Emperor Aurengzebe and is to be married to the King of Bucharia. Her journey to Cashmere from Delhi is enlivened by the stories told by Feramorz, a young poet from Cashmere, who joins her retinue. Also present is the self-important Fadladeen, who vents his annoyance at mishaps on the journey by criticizing Feramorz's poetry. Bookseller Inventory # 001092
