About this Item

FIRST EDITION. INSCRIBED BY JOHNSON as follows: "Helen Wolcott/ best of companions,/ most understanding of/ friends,--a true/ 'Elian' in spirit!/ with the Author's/ dearest love./ E.C.J./ Wellesley, 1935." [The American edition was published in 1936.] 12mo. [6]vii-xviii[2]1-288p. Hardcover. Frontispiece portrait of Charles Lamb plus eight b/w illustrations. Notes, Appendices, and Index. Red cloth with gilt letters. Newspaper obituary with portrait of Johnson pasted down to back of frontispiece, copyright page and the following page. Edith Christina Johnson [1891-1954] was the Sophie Chantral Hart Professor of English in Wellesley College. She was known for her seminars on the Modern Novel and Virginia Wolf. LAMB ALWAYS ELIA grew out of her doctoral reserach at Radcliffe on Charles Lamb [1775-1834]. The "Helen Wolcott" of the inscription is likely to be D. Helen Wolcott, a religious educator and tutor. A graduate of Hartford Seminary [1925], the American Schools of Oriental Research, and the University of Chicago, Wolcott was a Professor of Religion in Mt. Holyoke College, South Hadley, Massachusetts. Very slightly rubbed at corners, tape stains on half title page, gilt bright, else very good+/ No jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 04142
