About this Item

2 volumes. First edition. With 97 finely steel engraved plates, including the vignette extra-titles, engraved by W. and E. Finden from original works done "on the spot" by artists such as David Roberts, J. M. W. Turner, J. D. Harding, A. W. Collcott and others. Large 4to (295 x 230 mm), in handsome contemporary half-calf with corner pieces over textured cloth covered boards, the spines richly decorated in gilt compartments between flat blind-decorated bands, two compartments with brown and green morocco labels gilt lettered and ruled, endpapers, fly-leaves and all edges marbled. A fine and handsome set, internally as fresh and clean as could logically be hoped for, only the most trivial of age occasionally evident, the bindings handsome with only very light evidence of age, the inner hinges expertly strengthened. FIRST EDITION A STRIKING COLLECTION OF FINDEN ENGRAVED PLATES. Each of the compelling views of the landscapes of the bible are tissue-guarded, captioned and accompanied by plentiful descriptive text by the Rev. Hartwell Horne. The exquisite engravings include landscapes from both the Old and New Testaments. Rev. Horne's text is excellent. He was a well known and popular theologian who published more than forty works in bibliography and Biblical studies. Engravers William and Edward Finden were renown for the quality of their work. David Roberts was the foremost Orientalist painter of his day, especially famous for his works in Egypt, the Holy Land and the Near East. He was drawn to that part of the world by J. M. W. Turner, who's work is also well represented in this collection. Turner was considered a controversial figure in his day, but is now regarded as the artist who elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivaling history painting. Bookseller Inventory # 26482
