Early reprint. x, 308 pages. Hardcover: H 19.75cm x L 13.75cm. Dust jacket with colorfully illustrated pictorial front panel and spine; dj rubbed, nicks at edges with minor chips at spine heel and front flap fold heel, soiling to white rear panel; dj now presented in a mylar Brodart protector. Dark tan/light brown cloth with purple stamped spine lettering. Dark purple top edge; some toning to bottom edge and deckle fore-edge. Endpapers toned; interior leaves have slight toning at margins but otherwise are clean. Binding retains some crispness. A very good+ copy in a very good dust jacket. Carlton House published the first edition of LAW AND ORDER ON HALFADAY CREEK in 1941. As was their usual practice, Grosset & Dunlap only provides the novel's original publication date upon the copyright page but this early reprint was probably issued post-WWII between 1946 and 1950 at the latest for the dj does not have any war bonds or government rationing statement nor does the book itself reflect any lowered wartime production quality. Maroon boards, slight scuffing and bumping to spine ends, slender surface abrasion at upper front joint and lower rear joint. Minor soiling and slight foxing to edges; deckle fore-edge; endpapers toned/foxed; a few occurrences of slight foxing to interior leaves which, overall, remain quite clean. Binding retains some crispness. A very good copy in a very good dust jacket. STRANGE DOINGS ON HALFADAY CREEK was first published by Doubleday, Doran and Company in 1943; this Sun Dial Press reprint has a "Buy War Bonds" ad on its dj rear panel which indicates that it is still a wartime edition and thus likely published in either 1944 or 1945.
