About this title

Desperately unhappy and angry because her parents are constantly involved with their jobs, leaving her alone in their New York apartment with her grandmother, fourteen-year-old Jaimie longs for the opportunity to tell everyone how she really feels.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 6-9 Fourteen-year-old Jaimie wishes that her TV executive father and lawyer mother could be at home more even though her live-in grandmother is always available and understanding. Several subplots are skillfully interwoven into the story: Jaimie's crush on her best friend's brother, David; Jaimie and David's plan for her grandmother and his grandfather to spend some time together, with humorous results; and Jaimie's new friendship with a homeless child. After a mediocre climax, in which Jaimie's artistic offering wins honorable mention in a school contest, and Jaimie and her grandmother vent their frustrations to Jaimie's parents, who dutifully listen and promise to rearrange their schedules so they can be home more often, the predictable ending is nevertheless satisfying. The title implies the theme, which is stated and restated throughout the book, yet Jaimie not only wants more independence when her mother is around, but also wants her mother around more, contradictory feelings typical of many teens. The first-person narrative moves along smoothly in a style that emphasizes plot and dialogue, forsaking elaborate description of setting and characters, and thus making the story light and easy reading. This book will serve as yet another addition to the growing list of teen novels about professional parents who don't spend enough time with their kids.
