Book Description Smith, Elder and Co., 65, Cornhill, London, 1868. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. First impression of the true first edition. ***Illustrated with a complimentary pair (as called for) of black and white steel engravings: a frontispiece etching by H. Macbeth-Raeburn showing: 'Balmoral Castle from the Southeast' and a steel engraving facing page 158 showing: 'Balmoral Castle from the Northwest [dated 1867].' Also, two very small black and white line sketches in the text drawn by Queen Victoria of Cornish miners hats and dress at the end of the book to bottom of page 307. ***Very good in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and double decorative rules to spine and gilt decoration and decorative borders to front and rear board. Bevelled board edges. Brown coloured front and rear free endpapers and pastedowns. Decorative bordered pages. Contemporaneous owner's name and date, partially illegible, to second free endpaper in black fountain pen ink: ? January? 3rd 1867.' (Date written is before the published date 1868, so presumably book came out at the end of 1867, or else the owner wrote the wrong year at the start of 1868). Edges of boards slightly rubbed. Light foxing to edges and margins of prelims, not affecting etching itself. Light sporadic foxing to a few interior pages. Pages clean. Spine tight. ***xv numbered prelim pages including nine-page Editor's preface dated London, January, 1868, plus two-page contents plus 315 pages. 216mm x 156mm. ***'While the book was being printed, the Editor suggested that it would gain in interest if other extracts were added to it, describing her Majesty's progresses in England, Ireland, and the Channel Islands. ***The Queen was pleased to assent; and the additions were accordingly made.' (Quote from the preface, prelims-page ix written by the editor Arthur Helps [Sir Arthur Helps 1813-1875], London, 1868). ***'We arrived at Balmoral at a quarter to three. It is a pretty little castle in the old Scottish style. There is a picturesque tower and garden in front, with a high wooded hill; at the back there is a wood down to the Dee; and the hills rise all around. ***There is a nice little hall, with a billiard room; next to it is a dining-room. Upstairs (ascending by a good broad staircase) immediately to the right, and above the dining-room, is our sitting-room (formerly the drawing-room), a fine large room - next to which is our bed-room, opening into a little dressing-room which is Albert's---' (Quote from page 101: First impressions of Balmoral. Balmoral, Friday, September 8, 1848). ***'We visited here the Restoremel mine, belonging also to the Duchy of Cornwall. It is an iron mine, and you go in on a level. Albert and I got into one of the trucks and were dragged in by the miners, Mr. Taylor walking behind us. The miners wear a curious woolen dress, with cap like this: [sketch] and the dress thus: [sketch] (Quote from page 307, Tuesday, September 8. Second Yachting Excursion). ***First impression of the true first edition in its original cloth-covered boards. Of interest to collectors of antiquarian travel first editions on the Scottish Highlands and Queen Victoria. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Bookseller Inventory # 3690
