English Baptist minister John Foster was a fairly prolific essayist with this posthumous edition featuring a "Biographical Introduction" regarding Foster on pages 7-12 by Thomas O. Summers (1812-1882). One of the great theologians and intellects of the Methodist Church, Reverend Summers was elected in 1850 by the general conference as editor of all church books and tracts. From 1866 to 1878 he was editor of the weekly newspaper [Nashville] Christian Advocate. Summers was professor of systemic theology at Vanderbilt University beginning in 1874 and was dean of the theological faculty from 1875 until his death in 1882. Evidently a scarce antebellum Nashville, Tennessee imprint for OCLC cites copies at only three member institutions. There was a preceding 1855 Nashville edition (OCLC also citing only three holding institutions) as well as later Nashville editions in 1873 and 1883. Bookseller Inventory #
