Book Description New York: Charles Scribner's Sons [Scribner - Scribners], April 1956., 1956. THREE VOLUME COMPLETE SET. Reprint editions. All hardcover, each H 23.5cm x L 15.75cm, lacking dust jackets but in their original slipcase as issued. All three volumes are uniformly bound in black cloth with gilt stamping and dated for April 1956 from the original 1942, 1943, and 1944 first editions. All with illustrations, maps, appendixes, and indexes. Slipcase well soiled and toned with dull maroon paper on side panels and black paper on top and bottom panels; some scuffing and nicks along edges; slight splitting to seam where top panel meets rear panel; swath of peeled surface paper now re-glued adjacent to bottom panel seam with rear panel. Each volume's spines suffer from modestly obtrusive lightly discolored swaths of scuffed cloth but boards are not affected and retain fairly vibrant gilt stamping. VOLUME I: lviii, 773 pages. Long slender swath of scuffed cloth ascending from near spine heel to above spine center, several smaller similarly affected patches of cloth at head and heel affecting some of the spine's gilt stamping, small patch of mild white discoloration at top left corner of front board, top corners of boards bumped. Toning and foxing upon top and fore-edge with several light brown stains upon the latter but without affecting margins of interior leaves; some soiling and light toning to endpapers. VOLUME II: xlviii, 760 pages. Likewise small slender patches of scuffed slightly discolored cloth at lower spine with 2.5cm square swath near top affecting some of the gilt bars and title lettering. Touch of flaking to front board's gilt stamping. Some foxing and toning upon top edge and fore-edge. Interior pages are clean. VOLUME III: xlviii, 862 pages. Spine cloth again has several patches of scuffed cloth again affecting gilt stamping particularly at area of Freeman's name. Some foxing and toning upon top edge and fore-edge. A few occurrences of fingerprint smudges at margins of interior leaves evident upon a quick perusal but pages are still quite clean. Volume III also features a Select Critical Bibliography and a foldout map tipped-in at recto of rear free endpaper. Still good to good+ copies in a good slipcase. Please note that this heavy set has an approximate shipping weight of nine pounds and will require additional postage for any postal class other than domestic Media Mail. Seller Inventory # DHB-8347
