Description:

73rd Congress, 2nd Session, House Document 198. Full title. YAZOO RIVER, MISS. LETTER FROM THE SECRETARY OF WAR TRANSMITTING PURSUANT TO SECTION 1 OF THE RIVER AND HARBOR ACT APPROVED JANUARY 21, 1927, AND SECTION 10 OF THE FLOOD CONTROL ACT OF MAY 15, 1928, A LETTER FROM THE CHIEF OF ENGINEERS, UNITED STATES ARMY, DATED NOVEMBER 16, 1933, SUBMITTING A REPORT, TOGETHER WITH ACCOMPANYING PAPERS AND ILLUSTRATIONS, ON THE YAZOO RIVER, MISS., FOR THE PURPOSES OF NAVIGATION AND EFFICIENT DEVELOPMENT OF WATER POWER, THE CONTROL OF FLOODS, AND THE NEEDS OF IRRIGATION. ix, [3], 195 pages. Paperback; H 23.25cm x L 14.75cm. Crude modern brown tape repair along spine but staple binding still firm. Detached toned title leaf (i.e. pages i-ii) with ink signature at top margin and large chip to top right corner with shallow chipping and tears at edges; edgeworn pages iii-iv with large chip at bottom corner; shallow chipping to bottom corners of pages v-viii; some soiling and toning to mildly edgeworn and creased rear leaf; light edgewear to several other terminal leaves with fore-edge tear to pages 193-194. Features numerous b/w plates, maps, charts, and diagrams with many of the latter three as foldouts and most on unpaged leaves; additional tables interspersed amongst text. Only fair condition but an uncommon US government publication reviewing various Army Corps of Engineers efforts (including flood control) on the Yazoo River which runs from Greenwood, Mississippi to Vicksburg, Mississippi where it merges into the Mississippi River. Presumably the impetus for the developments noted in the report was the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 which adversely affected flow and navigation in many tributaries of the Mississippi including the Yazoo.
