Engraved title with large woodcut, engraved initials and head pieces throughout. Small 8vo, bound in modern boards but using an eighteenth century antiphonal leaf as covering, the leaf in brown and red ink, edges dyed red. 158 pp. With some marginal old damp staining and toning, but otherwise extremely well preserved. VERY SCARCE AND EXTREMELY EARLY "NEWS FROM THE EAST". These letters from the mission of the Jesuits in Japan are among the earliest Western accounts. Contained here are letters from Fathers Carrion, de Cespedes, Mexia, Lois Froes and Cabral. These date from the time of the Japanese Unification and the rule of the Shogun. Seller Inventory # 23482
