About this Item

First edition. 8vo, blue cloth in the dustjacket. 238. A very fine copy. A scarce book. These letters were written to a married woman who was herself a journalist and translator (she translated some of Kafka's stories into Czech); many were written while Kafka was in a sanatorium, confined by his illness. "From beginning to end theirs was an imprisoned love, intense, hopeless and self-destructive.[The letters] show a mind lucidly in control of an uncontrollable situation, and a soul miraculously sustained by its own hopelessness" (-from the dustjacket).
