thick 8vo. full calf stamped in blind and gilt, all edges marbled. (iv), li+(i), 912 pages. First edition. (Jackson no.63; Bigmore & Wyman I,171; Windle A50a). There were 2000 copies of this small paper edition printed. Although he spent several years preparing this last big book about books, Dibdin was severely criticized for the many errors in this work which now, according to Jackson, has little bibliographical value. In response to the critics, he did try to correct some of the errors when the second edition was published. Contains the later suppressed anecdote about Mordaunt Crachcherode's buckskins on page 394.
