About this Item

Early German edition of this widely read and respected work of poetry about impoverished Jews of the 19th Century. (an edition in Yiddish was published in 1898, the English language "Songs From The Ghetto" in Boston in 1899, and the first German Edition, Berlin 1903) Tan cloth covered boards with light blue titles and light blue and white design of the same format as editions with the black, silver and gilt on the front board. Spine blank but for a blue paper pastedown with black title. Small Quarto - 10 x 8" with canvas-like cloth with some some minor scuffs, light marks and general shelfware to extremities. Hinges carefully repaired with archival tape. Endpapers, slightly faded, decorated with repeating pattern of the Priestly Blessing hand gesture (Birchat Kohanim), hands outspread, thumbs touching, each hand's four fingers separated in a V (which inspired Spock's use of the gesture) Text block is bright and clean. Illustrated throughout with borders, tailpieces and full page black on white reproductions of E.M. Lilien's powerful and moving drawings and designs. Page margins very slightly "dulled" but without any detrimental effect. THE MOST AMAZING graphic image depicts a tailor sitting at his machine, while a greedy and parasitic boss crouches over his shoulder, sucking on a long glass tube, the end of which is implanted in the back of the tailor's neck. Writing and speaking of and for the Jewish proletariat in the 19th Century, Rosenfeld was a major early figure in Jewish Nationalism. His collaboration in this volume with Ephraim Moses Lilien brought together literary and graphic arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries to produce a moving and powerful testament to the plight and aspirations of those people and their cause. Lilien has been spoken of as the first major artist of the Zionist cause and later helped to establish Jerusalem's Bezalel School Of Art. "Lieder des Ghetto" was one of his earliest important commissions. He was credited with creating a uniquely Jewish approach to the Art Nouveau style. Bookseller Inventory # 72376
