Synopsis: The autobiography of Isadora Duncan, the world-renowned American dancer and teacher, which provides a frank account of her life as a dancer and a woman, with reflection on her notorious love affairs and the tragic deaths of her children. First published soon after her death in 1927.

Review: Fabulous is the only adjective that comes close to doing justice to Isadora Duncan (1878-1927). Her awesomely self-assured autobiography depicts a woman who while still in her teens tells an eminent theatrical manager (from whom she desperately needs a job), "I have discovered the art that has been lost for two thousand years.... I bring you the dance." In Duncan's rendering of her life, composers fling themselves at the piano and compose new music for her on the spot. Men pine for her love (the book's sexual frankness, while hardly startling today, was considered quite scandalous in 1927). And the poor mortals who can never understand her need to be free can at least applaud wildly at her concerts. Duncan and her siblings sleep in a bare Parisian attic, then dance barefoot through the Luxembourg Gardens. They travel to Greece to worship "in the Sacred Land of Hellas," where they build their very own temple. Duncan is capable of seeing the humor in her rhapsodic immersion in art, but we don't really want her to be realistic and self-deprecating like ordinary mortals. It's her divine passion, her supreme confidence in her own genius that make My Life such fun to read. --Wendy Smith

Book Description Liveright, New York, 1972. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Good. 359 pages. Reprint of the 1927 autobiography. Pages are age tanned. Blue covers have some edge wear and chipping and corners turned up. First few pages dog-eared. Illustrated with blackand white photos. Autobiography by the first of the modern dancers and one of the most prominent free-thinkers of our time. Describes her total commitment to establishing modern dance as a serious art form, leading the way for other great dance pioneers such as Agnes de Mille and Martha Graham. I confess that when it was first proposed to me I had a terror of writing this book. Not that my life has not been more interesting than any novel and more adventurous than any cinema and, if really well written, would not be an epoch-making recital, but there's the rub - the writing of it! For many years Isadora Duncan had planned to write an autobiography and she completed the work a few months before her tragic death. The manuscript was not in type before her death so she had no opporunity to read the proofs or to make corrections, and the work as it is now presented to the public is essentially as she wrote it. Size: 5" x 8". Bookseller Inventory # 4688
