Frontispiece engraving and facsimile signature of Schuyler Colfax. Brown cloth stamped and blocked in blind on both covers and with gilt letters and a gilt image os Colfax on the spine. Wear to extremities with the corners just barely rubbed through, cloth has some dampstains on it (but not affecting the interior, spine slightly faded, gilt slightly abraded but still bright, previous owner's signature on front free endpaper (A.S. Msxwell, M.D., Davenport, Iowa, Aug. 8/68), foxing throughout as usual (but not really problematic), frontispiece engraving in very good condition, else very good and better with no internal markings. Schuyler Colfax [1823-1885] was an American politician born in New York and moved to Indiana (1836). He was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1855-1869), Speaker of the House (1863-1869) and Vice-President of the U.S. (1869-1873).
