About this Item

INSCRIBED BY EDWARDS on the front free endpaper as follows: "Mr. & Mrs. O.E. Lindstrom / with the author's / love & esteem. / Christmas 1921 / J. F. Edwards." 8vo. (22 cm.) [7]viii-xx[5]2-323p. Foreword by Narayan G. Chandavarkar. Four appendices as follows: I. Hindu AVATARAS and the Christian Incarnation; II. Verbal Parallels between Tukaram and the New Testament; III. Tukaram's Alleged Indebtedness to Chritianity; IV> Additional Notes; V. Bibliography. Illustrated with 12 full-page black and white captioned photos. Index of "Abhangs", Index of Authors, and Index of Subjects. Maroon cloth with gilt letters on the spine. Very minor wear to extremities with one corner just barely rubbed through, top and bottom of spine just barely starting to fray, spine slightly faded, gilt bright, front hinge cracked with crash (super) intact, thumb-sized stain (now faint) on half title page, all illustrations present and in fine condition, else near fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. James Nelson Fraser [1869-1918] served in the Indian Education Department and was Principal of the Training College in Bombay for Teachers in Secondary Schools. He was joint author of THE POEMS OF TUKARAM and he wrote about 80 pages of the present work, which James Fairbrother Edwards [b. 1875] incorporated in this work which he finished. This work is a biography of the Maratha Poet-Saint, Tukaram. The Foreword by Narayan G. Chandavakar is, as Edwards suggests, "a worthy contribution to English-Marathy literture" in its own right.
